Do you know what really works for getting fit as a senior? Find an exercise buddy who will workout with you!
For many of us, being too busy is a big obstacle. Yes, it’s true: some of us are even more busy than we were working because we have new activities, friends and travel. How can healthy seniors make sure to find time every day to exercise? Buddy-up with a friend as your workout partner.
Exercise Buddy Rewards
Having a friend to workout with helps:
- Get your mind off exercises you don’t love
- Maintain an even pace to your exercise
- Motivate each other to work harder and longer
- Bring you both back on a regular basis
- Makes work more like play
For seniors who have been sedentary for many years, having a exercise buddy will stop you from quitting prematurely. Most of us are social creatures: we need camaraderie. Use your friends and stay healthy together. Do not underestimate the importance of the social side of fitness.
Combine strength training with catching up with a friend. Instead of going out to lunch, lift weights together. The time will go by quickly and you’ll find plenty to laugh about. The next time you start to turn on the TV, call a friend and suggest a walk.
It’s also safer to have someone in the gym to monitor your form, track your sets and repetitions, provide constructive feedback, and for general safety reasons. The most common cause of injuries (at any age) is bad form, which can be hard to determine if you work alone. For me, I want someone to spot me when I’m lifting heavy weights. Same goes for sports. With friends, we can motivate each other.
Find an exercise buddy—someone whose company you really enjoy. Try out activities you’ve never tried before; you may find something new to love. At worst, you would have spent time with a good friend.
